Spring 2015

The Condon Skelly Connection

Gearing Up for the Season

With the spring auction season behind us, we finally have time to focus on what this hobby is all about…fun! Those of you who are fortunate enough to use your collector cars year-round should consider yourselves lucky. For the rest of us, freeing our cars from hibernation each spring is like reuniting with an old friend.

1913 Renault at car show I am always amazed by how quickly my 1913 Renault starts, typically on the first crank! However, years of experience have taught me the importance of creating a pre-drive check list before even touching that crank. I create these lists for every car I own. They are written in a manner that anyone can read and understand, and then promptly pinned to my steering wheel or sun visor. Every new car I own causes a deeper reliance on these lists, because we all know that there is nothing worse than a motor locking up after only two minutes because you forgot to drain a radiator.

While pre-checking their own cars, be sure to remind your clients to inspect their trailers’ tire pressure, brakes, brake lights, and tie down straps as well! Most importantly, they should check the age of their tires, as trailers have a tendency to sit for long periods of time between uses. Consequently, these tires will often appear nearly-new long beyond their “use by” date. Every year we encounter new accidents involving trailers with blown tires. For advice to avoid such accidents, check out this article from Popular Mechanics.

Before your clients get back on the road with their vehicles, make sure they have them properly insured. If your client improved his or her car over the winter, you should email our Increase in Value Manager, Bruce Weed, at to discuss the new value of the vehicle.

Finally, if you happen to be in the Southern New Jersey or Philadelphia areas, please make a point to stop by our office and meet your team.

Happy Motoring!
Jim Kruse, Director of Condon Skelly

Buying a New Car

The beautiful spring weather has convinced your client to buy another collector car, and now it’s time to drive home!

Did you know that our collector car policies cover newly acquired collector cars? That coverage includes an agreed value limit which equals what your client paid (maximum $25,000). Liability is provided at a level equal to the current limits on your client's policy. This coverage is automatic for up to 30 days from date of purchase.

To add your new vehicle to your client's policy, you can visit our online agent portal or email All you have to do is request to add a new vehicle to an existing policy and include a full description of the vehicle, VIN, value of vehicle, intended use, garage location and a side view color photo of vehicle. The request will be processed within 1-2 days. Once the vehicle is added, we will email an ID card and an endorsement showing the additional premium due.

If you have any questions, feel free to give us a call at 800-257-9496 to speak directly with our team. Who knew insuring your fun could be so simple!

My insurance career began 24 years ago right here at Condon Skelly. I have stayed at Condon Skelly for so many years because of the people. calendarI really love the people in the collectible vehicle hobby as well as the agents we work with. Over the years, I have established many great relationships with agents and collectors that I value very much and I have enjoyed sharing our experiences and knowledge of the industry.

Since I have been involved in the classic vehicle insurance industry for so long, I have really seen this type of insurance and the hobby evolve over the years.

I really enjoy working at car shows since you get to see some great cars and meet current and future customers face to face. One of my favorite classic cars to see is the 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible. Maybe one day I will have one of my own.

Condon Skelly on Claims

Dave, a Condon Skelly insured, was visiting a friend on a Saturday afternoon and decided to show off his 1956 Corvette. While driving home, Dave noticed a problem with his car. As he put on his hazard lights and pulled over to assess the situation, another vehicle came up from behind at full speed and rear-ended him. Dave suffered a mild concussion, a fractured arm, and a herniated disc which required surgery as a result of the accident. Dave’s medical bills totaled nearly $250,000, not to mention another $24,000 in damage to his Corvette.

Liability was determined early, and the other driver was found 100% at fault. However, that driver carried the minimum liability insurance for the state, totaling just $25,000. This amount barely covered the damage to the Corvette, leaving Dave with over $250,000 worth of medical bills. Luckily, Dave elected to carry Under or Uninsured Motorist (UIM) coverage with Condon Skelly for only $16 in premium. His claim was reported to our team and we were able to cover all medical bills at no additional cost to him.

Although he wishes the accident had never occurred, the situation could have been much worse. If Dave had elected to waive UIM coverage, he would have been forced to pay $250,000 in medical bills out of his own pocket. Dave has since fully recovered from his injuries, and has returned to cruising in his Corvette on the weekends.

In 2012, an estimated 1 out of 7 drivers was on the road uninsured, and this number is even higher in urban areas. Each year, 14% of motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. involve an unisured motorist. Are your clients protected from these motorists? Give us a call today at 800-257-9496 or visit us online at to learn more about Under or Uninsured Motorist coverage.
